In the past the Cesar Chavez Student Center and the Rack-N-Cue have been able to provide transportation and accommodations to the top representatives of San Francisco State University to the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) regional and national tournaments. The following table details the average costs for a regional tournament:

The table does not include extra costs such as school qualifying tournaments and the manager’s per diem.

The Rack-N-Cue would still like to encourage participation and will still hold a school wide qualifying tournament. We also are looking into providing registration fee assistance to the finalists of the school qualifier.

The Rack-N-Cue manager has considered a number of alternatives, however at this time it will be the responsibility of interested participants to take a proactive role in upholding the San Francisco State University legacy. If you are interested in further discussions on this please feel free to talk to any of the Rack-N-Cue staff.

After 48 hours of fierce, spirited competition, the 2009 ACUI 9-ball Championships, presented by Ozone Billiards, are officially in the history books at Illinois State University! Fifty-three students representing 41 schools across the United States participated in this annual championship, dating back to 1937.

The following are excerpts from her messages:

“They started this past Tuesday (July 21, 2009) at 7:00PM… 37 men and 16 women participated in the competition this year.”

“Lars Vardaman is sitting pretty in the hot seat after day two of competition in the ACUI Collegiate 9-ball Championships at Illinois State University. Vardaman returns for his final year of eligibility, attempting to be the first man in ACUI history to win the ACUI national title four times. A Pharmacy student at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville, he won in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Eleanor Callado, now the ACUI 9-ball Director, also won the ACUI title four times during her college tenure at San Francisco State University. In this race-to-8 double elimination event, Vardaman’s road to victory tracks as follows: Andrew Parry (Nassau Community College) 8-4, David Fitzgerald (Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville) 8-1, Tommy Najar (New Mexico State University) 8-3, Quentin Weir (University of Michigan) 8-3, and Adam Maloney (Texas A&M University) 8-4. Maloney and Sam Gilmer (Mississippi State University) will play at 10AM on Thursday in the Finals of the One-loss side. The winner of that match will play a single race to 13 against Vardaman for the 2009 ACUI title and $1,000 scholarship.

In the Women’s division, Shari Cui of the University of Illinois – Chicago has been virtually unchallenged on her road to the hot seat. An early-round dress code violation nearly cost Cui her spot on the east side of the chart, when her opponent, trailing 5-2 in a race to 7, reported the dress code violation to tournament directors. After some scrambling and negotiating, Cui was able to correct the violation within 15 minutes and went on to win the match. She defeated Melanie Gilmer (Mississippi State University) 7-3, Monica Fox (University of Florida) 7-2, Kris Landry (Fitchburg State College) 7-4, and Stephanie Sevigny (North Dakota State University) 7-2. Sevigny faces Karla Yates (Morgan State University) Thursday morning in the finals of the One-loss side to see who earns the shot at dethroning Cui in a single race to 11.

Ozone Billiards sponsors the scholarships for this prestigious championship: $1000 to each of the 1st-place winners; $500 to 2nd; $250 to 3rd; and $100 to 4th.

In the Break Contest, Cindy Ho of Sacramento State scored 9 points in a 10-rack break-off to win the ladies’ “Best Break” award. Two men are tied at 12, but the finalists in the tournament still get a chance to dethrone them on Thursday. Kevin Vaughn of Bentley University and Varun Raheja of the University of Houston both scored 12 on Wednesday and will have a 5-rack break-off if no one scores a 13 or higher.
